Historical Summary (11.2.1):

Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins met at their high school newspaper back in 1994. From there they became a team that worked together to try to make money by doing what they love, making comic strips. Moving in together and avoiding college, they got their first break at looneygames.com before making their website which slowly gathered the attention of industry professionals, including Valve developers who helped host their website.

In 2002 Robert Khoo offered them free lunch to discuss a business plan, something that both Mike and Jerry did not have. After a chance threat at a marketing firm and a sudden urgency to leave a consulting gig, Robert gave the ultimatum. Let him work for free for two months, if he could not make his salary with them, then he would leave. Lucky for the duo he Khoo what he was doing.

As Penny Arcade gathered more readers, both Mike a Jerry were able to travel to conventions to sell comics to fans of conventions. When at a Kansas City convention they had their vision of making their convention. Instead of treating video games as an afterthought at a convention, why not lean into it and cater to the gamers themselves? In 2004 this was put into practice as 3,000 people attended the first event, ending with a crowd cheering people playing Pong on the mainstage. In subsequent years they grew the event, moved to the largest venue in the state, and also expanded to become an international event.

Today Penny Arcade focuses on three core things, the webcomic, PAX, and Child’s Play. CP is a charity that has raised over 50 million dollars to help children in hospitals who use games to keep them happy while receiving treatment (Source).
